What is Substance Use Disorder?

According to the Mayo Clinic, drug addiction, also called substance use disorder, is a disease that affects a person’s brain and behavior, leading to the inability to control the use of a legal or illegal drugs or medications. Substances such as alcohol, marijuana, and nicotine are also considered drugs.

When you’re addicted, you may continue using the drug despite the harm it causes. Left untreated, substance use disorder can lead to major disruptions in your life with work, relationships, and overall health. It may also lead to legal problems, incarceration, or worse.
